Champion Historical Society September Meeting and Program
Champion Historical Society: Pot-luck picnic and program Aug. 28
The Champion Historical Society meeting is scheduled for Wed., Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. This will be a pot-luck picnic at the Clarence Darrow Metro Park 483 Educational Highway NW 44483 near TCTC and Kent State University - Trumbull Campus.
The featured program will be presented by Champion High School graduate Gary Moss. Gary is a Clarence Darrow historian, and he and his wife, Donna, are owners of the Clarence Darrow Octagon House in Kinsmen, OH. He will share interesting information about Clarence Darrow. New members and interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Everyone is asked to please bring a lawn chair, a dish to share and your table service.

Champion Historical Society extends gratitude
One of the primary goals of the Champion Historical Society is to maintain and preserve the One Room School House No. 3. as a significant remnant of local history.
The Society would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Josh and Scott Vesey of VZ Cleaning Services who donated their time and expertise to clean the exterior of the School House.
The Society would also like to thank Rex and Cathy Fee for their generous monetary donation. These services and funds along with monies generated from fundraisers, membership dues, and memorial/general donations help support the ongoing preservation/maintenance needs of One Room School House No. 3 located adjacent to the Township Cemetery.
Champion Historical Society Membership
Do you have a passion for learning about the history of different objects, people and locations? Are you now or have you ever lived in Champion Township? Do you want to support local preservation of local history? Are you interested in joining the Society?
Joining is quick and easy and only takes a few minutes! Simply fill out the form and send your information and dues to the Society. Members may also use the form for renewal purposes. You can also gift a membership to a loved one or friend or donate to a memorial membership in support of the Champion Historical Society's projects and goals.
Basic membership dues for the Champion Historical Society are $10.00 for an individual, and $15.00 per family (living in the same residence). Dues are annual and not prorated. Thank you!
Champion Historical Society Timeline Project
The Champion Historical Society has begun a continuing project of developing and maintaining a timeline of Champion Township. Society members and members of the public will be invited to contribute to the timeline.

Champion Historical Society Annual Fall Banquet and History Show & Tell
On Nov. 7 the Society will hold its Fall Banquet at 6 p.m. at Champion Presbyterian Church.
The public is welcome and encouraged to attend this annual community event. The Society will provide the main meat dish, dessert and beverage. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish. There is no charge for members; $5 for non-members for the dinner. Membership renewal will be due at this time. Individual annual membership is $10 and family annual membership is $15. New members are welcome.
The Society is asking attendees to please bring an item of historical interest to share with the group. After the honor ceremony, display tables will be available so that attendees may view and discuss items in an informal History Show and Tell.
The Society is a member of the Champion Pride Council. Please bring a canned or boxed good for the winter food drive. All donations are appreciated.
Victorian Society presentation
The Champion Historical Society is hosting historical researcher Dr. Ron Brooks. Dr. Brooks will give a presentation on Victorian Society. This event will be held on Sept. 25 at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, however a goodwill donation is appreciated.

The Champion Historical Society Annual picnic and social gathering will be held at the One Room School House located adjacent to the Township Cemetery on Wednesday, July 31 at 6 p.m.
Everyone is asked to bring a side dish. Main dish as well as beverage and paper goods will be provided by the Society. Members, family, friends and those who may be interested in the Society are welcome to attend.

Champion Historical Society sets May meeting
Champion Historical Society Timeline Project
The Champion Township Historical Society will meet on Wednesday, May 29 at the One Room School House located at 149 Center Street E. at 6 p.m. Each year the Society welcomes their annual scholarship recipient. This year’s recipient is Garrett Cogar. He will present her award-winning essay to those in attendance.
The Society will also explore pioneer life with the Museum in a Box (courtesy of the Sutliff Museum) Interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Mugs make memorable gifts
The Champion Historical Society is proud to offer its limited-edition mugs of the township’s one-room schoolhouse for sale. You still have time before the holidays to get a mug or two.
The mugs feature the Shafer Road, School House Number 3 that is located next to the administration building. Proceeds from the sale of the mugs will go towards renovations that are needed to maintain the building.
The mugs are a limited edition and once the edition is sold-out, they will not be reproduced. The black and white C-style mug is $10. Orders will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. For more information or call 330.979.3739 to place your order.
General Simon Perkins presentation
The Champion Historical Society is hosting historical researcher Dr. Ron Brooks. Dr. Brooks presents an in-persona reenactment of General Simon Perkins. 2018 Champion Historical Society Scholarship recipient
Each year the Champion Historical Society welcomes their annual scholarship recipient to present their essay in the One Room School House. This year’s recipient, Madelyn Williams, pictured center with her family, is a member of the Champion High School class of 2018. Madelyn’s essay reflected on the importance of history and community.

Free Barn Quilt Presentation - Public Invited
The Champion Historical Society is pleased to welcome Harold and Betty Babb as presenters on a very interesting topic, steeped in history: Barn Quilts. A barn quilt is a large piece of wood that is painted to look like a quilt block; many times, there is meaning associated with the pattern and/or placement.
This free presentation is open to the public and will be held on Wednesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Champion Board of Education, 5976 Mahoning Avenue, Warren, Ohio. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend this event.
Please enter Champion High School from the North Drive off Mahoning Avenue. Proceed all the way around the building to the Board Office parking lot located at the Southeast corner of the facility.
There is NO access to the Champion Local Schools Community Room from the south entrance to Champion High School.

Society posthumously honors Roger Samuelson at annual banquet
The Champion Historical Society recently held its annual fall banquet. At the banquet the Society introduced two new levels of membership. The Lifetime Membership and the Memorial Membership. Families, relatives and friends will be able to posthumously honor their loved ones by purchasing a Memorial Membership. There will be a plaque placed in the One Room School House and funds raised by the Memorial Memberships will support the activities and goals of the Society.
Roger Samuelson, long-time School Board Member and Society member, who passed in 2017 was the first name added to the plaque. The Society decided to commemorate Samuelson as he tirelessly supported the community of Champion for decades.
The Champion Historical Society would like to express thanks to all those that made the evening such a success. Thanks especially to Patty Posey for her support.

Champion Historical Society to feature Underground Railroad Presentation
The Champion Historical Society held FREE presentation on in September in the Township office, adjacent to the Champion Township Cemetery. The Society was pleased to welcome Melissa Karman, director of the Sutliff Museum. Her topic of presentation will be Myths of the Underground Railroad and how the Sutliff family was involved. Champion Historical Society awards annual scholarship
The Champion Historical Society was pleased to present, Emily Janikowski, its annual scholarship of $350. The scholarship is open to Champion High School graduating seniors who meet the guidelines, write and present an essay at the Society’s May meeting. Emily’s essay was chosen as it astutely expressed many of the principles and goals of the society.
The Champion Historical Society is dedicated to preservation, restoration and dissemination of local, state and national history. Champion Historical Society sets May meeting
Champion Historical Society will hold its May meeting on Wednesday, May 31 at the One Room School House adjacent to Champion Township cemetery 6 p.m. The 2017 Society Scholarship recipient, Emily Janikowski, will share her essay on the importance of preserving local history.
Ongoing and upcoming projects will also be discussed. The School House is open to the public at this time and community members can view the many artifacts held in the Society's care. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend this free event.

Groundbreaking artifact presented to Champion Historical Society
The Champion Historical Society was recently presented with a shovel by the Champion School Board of Education. Kelly Boyle, board president, made the presentation. The shovel was used in the recent groundbreaking of the new Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8 school building by the Champion Schools Board of Education. Society member Karen Vitale accepted this artifact on behalf of the organization. This is history in the making and the Society is so happy to become the custodians of this item.
Irons hold an interesting place in history
The Champion Historical Society held a very informative program on Wednesday, March 29 at Champion Estates, 1 Windsor Place, located on the Windsor House Campus off of Champion St. East.
The Society welcomed Mr. John Streitferdt who gave a presentation of vintage irons and steamers and other items of interest. He brought items from his personal collection and related their significance on daily life as well as industry that these vintages items hold.
The next Society meeting will be Wednesday, May 31 at 6 p.m. at the One Room Schoolhouse located adjacent to the Township Cemetery. The Champion Historical Society 2017 Scholarship recipient will present their essay. The public is encouraged to attend.

Champion Historical Society Annual Scholarship
The Champion Historical Society is pleased to be able to offer a one-time, non-renewing scholarship of $350. The scholarship is open to Champion High School graduating seniors. Click the button to access the scholarship requirements. Deadline for submissions is March 10, 2018. The recipient will be announced at the 2018 CHS Scholarship night on May 1. The scholarship will be awarded on the May 30 Society meeting where the recipient will make the essay presentation.

Champion Historical Society holds honors banquet
The Champion Historical Society held its annual honors banquet. The much deserved recipient of the Society’s Honored member was Rhonda Fonce. Rhonda was instrumental in the reformation of the society seven years ago. Rhonda served two terms as Society president. In that role she has help rekindle an interest in local history and has organized many presentations and events. Rhonda now serves as the Society treasurer. Eadie Sampson, past recipient of the Society’s Honored Person of the year award, gave a lovely speech about the contribution Rhonda has made to the Society and the community.
The Champion Historical Society would like to express thanks to all those that made the evening such a success. Thanks especially to Eadie, Randy, and Lynette Sampson and Patty Posey for their support.
History Show and Tell
The event also featured a History Show and Tell where attendees were able to share personal items that have some historic interest. The items were varied and interesting. Items included an antique iron fluter, silver spoons, glassware, vintage Disney memorabilia, a children’s book of 365 bedtime stories, a Champion Presbyterian Church combative plate, and a mourning cape.
